Day 20 - Prayer Changes Everything?

Greetings,

Today, is day 20. Twenty means redemption, crowning accomplishments, divine completion for spiritual perfection, expectation.

Expectation means to look forward to, regard as likely to happen, anticipation of an outcome, or the occurrence of, the coming of.

May expectation rise in us for a revival to invade our churches, our lives and the next 'great awakening' to sweep across our nation.

Under the Spout of Heaven, Crying Out for Awakening,

Prayer Changes Everything!

The Third Wave

Why examine past awakenings and revival? The cry coming from God’s people and many nations is for revival and another "Great Awakening." An awakening goes beyond the influence of a revival. Revival brings back to life the people of God from a state of slumber and apathy.

A "Great Awakening" comes to a whole nation, changing even the culture of the time. The Psalmist exhorts us that: "What we have heard and known, what our fathers have had told us, we will not hide from our children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord ..." (Psalm 78:2-7).

Marks of the Third Wave of Awakening

This awakening, which began in 1830 only lasted about 12 years ending around 1842. It should be noted that this revival period is often seen as one with the former period. There were a constant stream of spasmodic revivals from 1800-1820 which petered out through the next few years and then exploded from about 1830 onwards… some scholars, particularly Orr, refer to this revival time as a 'resurgence.' …

Nevertheless, because of the 'new measures' and anti-Calvinistic Arminianism of Charles Finney and the astounding influence of this man's ministry it should be seen as quite a separate event.

  1. Charles Finney, was used to bring awakening and aid the spread of revival through his writings.

  2. Man of prayer: Daniel Nash - When God would direct where a meeting was to be held, Father Nash would slip quietly into town and seek to get two or three people to enter into a covenant of prayer with him. Together they would begin to pray fervently for God to move in the community.

  3. Churches increased especially the Methodist Episcopal; doubling in size in two years.

  4. George Muller another powerful man of God pioneered orphanage work, evangelism, and missionary enterprise.

  5. Restoration of doctrine: Brethrenism began during this awakening, they restored the doctrine of the Church and the return of Christ. Also, the restoration of spiritual gifts and apostolic ministries to the Church.

I believe gaining a knowledge and understanding of the history of revivals / awakenings is essential in our preparation for what God is planning to do on the earth.

Yesterday while getting ready for our daughters ministry school graduation I heard the Spirit says, ‘contentment’ He went on to say, “My people are not eagerly seeking revival because they are content with their church life.” He said, they like their church, the worship, the pastor’s teaching, fellowship, etc and therefore do not see the need for an awakening.”

  • Content: satisfied with a certain level of achievement, good fortune, etc., and not wishing for more. ‘something that’s contained in a box’ = Church, the 4 walls, our four and no more mentality.

Then this morning I heard the phrase ‘state of affairs’. The Spirit said, “if we would take time to review the state of affairs in our lives, the Church, the Nation and the ungodly, we would realize we are truly in need of a revival in our hearts and an awakening for the Nation.”

  • State of affairs: the general situation and circumstances connected with someone or something; concerned with the civil government of a country; specify the facts of (a case) for consideration.

Believe me, I get it, most of us have ‘stuff ‘going on in our lives and families that we can’t even think of the bigger picture like the state of the Church or Nation.
But, as Christians (little Christ) we are called to see the bigger picture; Why, because we have within us the HOPE for mankind; the love of the Father, Grace of the Son and the fellowship of Holy Spirit.

There is ONE THING we all can do to hasten revival and that is to PRAY! A simple prayer like ‘Rend the Heavens Oh Lord and Come Down!’ echoed by hundreds or thousands of believers can change the state of affairs in our world - it can hasten awakening in our day!

Could it Be? Covenant of Prayer

  • Covenant: an agreement which brings about a relationship of commitment between God and his people. Also people to people coming into agreement, relationship, commitment with one another for a common cause.

Isaiah 60 :22 A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the LORD will hasten it in his time.

  • Synergy: the interaction or cooperation of two or more to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects:

  • Hasten: to show haste, act quickly, hasten, come quickly

Arise, Shine!

Arise, shine; for your light has come, And the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. 2 "For behold, darkness will cover the earth And deep darkness the peoples; But the LORD will rise upon you And His glory will appear upon you. 3 "Nations will come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising. 4 "Lift up your eyes round about and see; They all gather together, they come to you. Your sons will come from afar, And your daughters will be carried in the arms. 5 "Then you will see and be radiant, And your heart will thrill and rejoice; Because the abundance of the sea will be turned to you, The wealth of the nations will come to you. - Isaiah 60:1-5

ACTION

  • Read: Psalms 119: 105-112 (revive us, Oh Lord)  also Third Wave of Awakening below - do it again, Lord!

  • Cry Out for God’s Presence to invade your life, church, city and this nation!

  • Ask Holy Spirit to give you a deeper burden of prayer for the lost, for the Church.

  • Would you join me in a ‘covenant of prayer’ to pray fervently for God to move in the community?

  • Ask Holy Spirit for a fresh anointing to travail - bring to birth His awakening, revival, reformation.

  • Call forth revival, awakening in our day!

  • Wait in His Presence, get under the spout of heaven…Arise, Shine the Light of God’s Glory wherever you go!

Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.

- Psalms 55:17

DO IT AGAIN, LORD!

The Third Great Awakening of 1830 onwards…1830 to 1842 (12 yrs.)

Fast on the heels of the Second Great Awakening, the third wave of heavenly power crashed on the shores of the evangelical world, this time without the usual decline. Asahel Nettleton and Charles Finney are names which dominate the American scene, while another American, James Caughey was the most notable revival evangelist active in England.

Finney's well documented ministry began in 1830 and netted 100,000 souls within one year! The Methodist Episcopal church steadily increased in the 1830's, especially through camp-meetings. But their numbers doubled in 1840-1842. Other denominations flourished too.

The greatest effect of this revival was felt far beyond the boarders of North America and for centuries to come. Finney's philosophy of revival, expressed in his autobiography and explained in his "Revivals of Religion", has subsequently affected thousands of Christians and precipitated revivals around the world.

In the UK revivals were widespread throughout the 1830's. Evangelists like Robert Aitkin and William Haslam held highly successful missions. Brethrenism began during this period, restoring the doctrine of the church and the doctrine of the return of Christ. Its noticeable personalities were J. N. Darby and George Müller who pioneered orphanage work, evangelism and missionary enterprise. Another restoration movement was led by Edward Irving, who strongly believed in the restoration of spiritual gifts and apostolic ministries to the church.

John Elias, Christmas Evans and William Williams stormed Wales with their powerful preaching. Scotland also boasted some great revivalists like John and Horatius Bonar, the revival veteran, Thomas Chalmers, Robert Murray McCheyne, W. H. Burns and his son, William Chalmers Burns.

On the wider international front, there were local revivals in various parts of the world, particularly in Scandinavia, central Europe, South Africa, the Pacific Islands, India, Malabar, and Ceylon.

This awakening, which began in 1830 only lasted about 12 years ending around 1842. It should be noted that this revival period is often seen as one with the former period. There were a constant stream of spasmodic revivals from 1800-1820 which petered out through the next few years and then exploded from about 1830 onwards.

Some of the evangelists, like Asahel Nettleton, played a major role in both periods and some scholars, particularly Orr, refer to this revival time as a 'resurgence.' Nevertheless, because of the 'new measures' and anti-Calvinistic Arminianism of Charles Finney and the astounding influence of this man's ministry it should be seen as quite a separate event.

OH, THAT You would rend the heavens and that You would come down, that the mountains might quake and flow down at Your presence--As when fire kindles the brushwood and the fire causes the waters to boil--to make Your name known to Your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at Your presence! - Isaiah 64:1-2
