Day 36 - Angels Announce John & Jesus’ Birth
New Era Begins
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. - Colossians 1:16 -17
Today begins week 6; up to this point we have look at the angelic encounters in the Old Testament. Over the next 2 weeks we will examine various angelic encounters in the New Testament.
A span of 400 yrs. of relative silence took place between the Old and New Testament. The New Testament marks a new era in God relating to man. In the gospel of Luke this new era opens with 2 angelic visitations announcing the birth of John and Jesus. These men would shake the status quo and turn the civil and religious world upside down.
This year it has been prophesied that the Church has entered ‘a new era’ according to Scripture what marks - what signs accompany a new era? What can we expect to see, hear and do in this new era?
Here are a few things:
1. Divinely Chosen - Zacharias Chosen to Burn Incense
Luke 1:5-7 …a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth…but they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years. So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division, according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot fell to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
- Now, you need to understand that Zacharias opportunity to serve in the Temple, especially to burn incense was very rare; once in a lifetime. The priest were chosen by a lot system, there were as many as 20,000 priest serving in the time of Jesus. So for Zacharias to be chosen was divinely orchestrated.
2. Angel Appears - Announces the birth of John the Baptist.
Luke 1:11-17 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. “And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
- His prayers had been heard
- John’s name and destiny foretold - He comes in the power of Elijah
- John Filled with the Spirit in the womb
3. Will you believe? Faith is Essential in a New Era
Zacharias Doubts the Promise
Luke 1:18-20 And Zacharias said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.” And the angel answered and said to him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.”
4. Angel Gabriel Appears to Mary - She Chooses to Believe
Jesus’ Birth Announced
Luke 1:26, 28-33 Now in the sixth month (of Elizabeth’s prophesy) the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, And having come in, the angel said to her, "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom, there will be no end.”
- Mary was also Chosen & Favored by God
- Jesus birth and destiny foretold
Mary Ask Questions; not out of doubt BUT from a place of wonderment
Luke 1:34-35 Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be since I do not know a man?” And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
5. In a New Era - Barrenness is Broken
Mary is told about her relative Elizabeth’s wonderful news: Luke 1:36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.
6. In a New Era - All Things Are Possible
Luke 1:37 For with God nothing will be impossible.
7. In a New Era - Position Yourself to Receive the Word of the Lord
