Day 27 – Elijah’s Last Act

Dear Arising Ones,

As I was with Elijah, so I am with you, says the Lord. Arise, and God! Whatever task you find yourself doing today, do it whole-heartily as unto Me. I am with you today and every day, go in this your might!

Arising with the King,

Day 27 – Elijah’s Last Act

Arise, Go!

For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. - Colossians 1:16 -17

About 10 years has passed since Elijah anointed Elisha to be Israel’s prophet. Elijah was in semi-retirement, he probably lived somewhere near Mount Carmel. At the Lord’s call he would rise from his resting place and go perform whatever task the Lord ask of him.

In today’s passage; 2 Kings 1 we see Elijah being summoned by the Angel of the Lord to meet King Ahaziah’s messengers. King Ahaziah had fallen through a lattice and was seriously injured so he sent messengers to inquire of Baal-Zubub, the god of Ekron; to see if he would recovery. Ahaziah means ‘held or sustained’ by the Lord.

Even in retirement Elijah was challenging the Kings of Israel to follow the Lord. Is there not a God in Israel?

2 Kings 1:3-4 3But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?'  4 Now therefore, thus says the LORD: 'You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.' So Elijah departed.

We have seen over and over again that the angels of the Lord come to God’s people to give specific instructions. They aid, protect, lead, warn, they appear as fire, wind, light, a cloud and so much more.

The Kings messengers went back to announce what Elijah had said, to say the least, he was not happen with the answer. So, he sends fifty messengers to bring Elijah back to the palace.  Elijah is not going back to the palace so instead he calls down fire - twice upon the messengers. The King stills thinks it’s a good idea to send another fifty messengers. But, alas, the captain of this fifty is a smart cookie and humbles himself and begs for his life.

The angel of the Lord then says to Elijah15Go down with him; do not be afraid of him." So he arose and went down with him to the king. Elijah gives the King the same message; you are going to die from your injury and he does.

This was Elijah last act as the prophet of Israel, shortly after this he was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. To the very end of his life and ministry, Elijah had a burden to see Israel follow wholeheartedly after the Lord.

Word of the Lord

Wholehearted devotion is the recipe for life; whether you are a stay at home mom, a teacher, businessmen, entertainer, minister of the gospel, or retired from a career. Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. (Col. 3:23) As I was with Elijah so I am with you, says the Lord. Listen for the still small voice, receive angelic assistance and heed the voice of My Spirit and you too will be continually fired up to accomplish all I ask of you, even to the end of your days, says your God!

 Open our eyes, Lord!

Open my eyes to see the miracle-wonders hidden in Your word. - Psalms 119:18 (Passion)
