Day 25 – Four Entities Operating in the Affairs of Men
God, Satan, Prophets & Angels
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. - Colossians 1:16 -17
Our passage today is I Chronicles 21 the backdrop for this chapter is King David taking a census of the fighting men of Israel. With the help of Almighty God David had defeated many armies, even those with giants and conquered much land yet he felt it necessary to number his army. This counting displeased God, probably because David was not to rely of the might of his army to prevail over his enemies BUT the hand of Elohim.
God’s displeasure prompted a prophet to deliver options to David to rectify the sin and an angel to carry out the solution.
We see 5 entities operating in this passage: satan, God, man and angels.
1. Satan is first on the scene: 1Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.
- Stood up: we see this same phase in Job and in Zechariah in these passages it references satan standing before the court of heaven bringing accusations against men…I believe this is what he is doing here as well.
- Moved David: move means to incite, allure, instigate, entice.
So, we see 2 things the enemy does against men; brings accusation and entices men to sin.
2. David after being moved by satan calls Joab to go out and count the army. Joab seeks to advice the King not to pursue the census but David would not heed his advice. 4 Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab.
3. God: 7 God was displeased with this thing; therefore He struck Israel.
8 So David said to God, "I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing; but now, I pray, take away the
iniquity of Your servant, for I have done very foolishly."
4. Prophet - Then the LORD spoke to Gad, David's seer, saying, "Go and tell David, saying, 'Thus says the
LORD: "I offer you three things; choose one of them for yourself, that I may do it to you."
The prophet offered David 3 solutions: 11 Choose for yourself, 12 either three years of famine, or three months to be defeated by your foes with the sword of your enemies overtaking you, or else for three days the sword of the LORD—the plague in the land, with the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.' Now consider what answer I should take back to Him who sent me." David chooses the destroying angel to go throughout the land of Israel. 14 So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell. 15And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it God …15 As he was destroying, the LORD looked and relented of the disaster, and said to the angel who was destroying, "It is enough; now restrain your hand." And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
5. Angels: 16 David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and heaven, having in his hand a drawn sword stretched out over Jerusalem. So David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.
David repented… 18 Therefore, the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David that David should go and erect an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
David heeds the word of the prophet and goes to the threshing floor to erect an altar and offer a sacrifice for his sin. Ornan and his sons see the Angel of the Lord, his sons hide but Ornan continues to thresh wheat. But when Ornan sees the King approach he goes out to meet him. David asked to purchase the threshing floor But Ornan offers to give it to the King. David however says; 24 Then King David said to Ornan, "No, but I will surely buy it for the full price, for I will not take what is yours for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings with that which costs me nothing.
26 And David built there an altar to the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on the LORD; and He answered him from heaven by fire on the altar of burnt offering. 27 So the LORD commanded the angel, and he returned his sword to its sheath.
Word of the Lord
Daily choices are set before you - Choose Life and blessing, NOT death and cursing says the Lord. As you can clearly see is this account the enemy, Satan, stands before Me bringing accusations against you. He seeks to provoke, entice, and incite you to sin. BUT the Blood of My Son has paid for your freedom and silenced his accusations. Now your position is to keep your heart and conscience clean. You have free access into My throne to nullify any accusation the enemy may bring against you, your family, etc. I work on earth through men, the Holy Spirit and angels are your partners. Yield to the Spirit and release the angels to accomplish My will on earth.
Open our eyes, Lord!
Open my eyes, so that I may behold wondrous things out of Your law - Psalms 119:18 (NRSV)
What does the Bible say?
Read: I Chronicles 21 What stands out to you in this passage?
Action: The Key to understand in this passage is Choice. Our choices in life determine the outcome we will receive. David’s pride or insecurity gave satan legal access into his life. Once the enemy has access he can lead us however he wants. Ask Holy Spirit to search your heart revealing any choices you have or are making that is giving the enemy legal access to wreak havoc in your life.
Decree: I choose life! I choose to heed the voice of the Lord. I choose to walk in God’s Ways!
