Day 23 – Commander of the Lord of Hosts

Day 23 – Commander of the Lord of Hosts

God is with Us!

For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. - Colossians 1:16 -17

Conquest of Canaan

The children of Israel have crossed over the Jordan, Moses has died and Joshua is now their leader. The Lord commanded Joshua to circumcise all the men who had been born in the wilderness – set them apart for the service of the Lord. They were circumcised at Gilgal which means ‘reproach has been rolled away’.

Joshua 5:1,6-7  So it was, when all the kings of the Amorites who were on the west side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over, that their heart melted; and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the children of Israel.  6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people who were men of war, who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they did not obey the voice of the LORD—to whom the LORD swore that He would not show them the land which the LORD had sworn to their fathers that He would give us, "a land flowing with milk and honey."  7 Then Joshua circumcised their sons whom He raised up in their place; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way.

Under Joshua’s leadership the children of Israel celebrated Passover after the crossed the Jordan River. Manna ceased the day after they celebrated the feast. It was time for them to eat of the produce of the Promised Land.

The Promised Land didn’t just automatically come into their hands, the children of Israel – as do we – had to take up their weapons and possess the land that had been promised. BUT, good news, they – nor do we – fight the battle alone!

Commander of the Lord’s Host

Lord Sabbaoth

Joshua 5:13-15 13 Now it came about when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand, and Joshua went to him and said to him, "Are you for us or for our adversaries?"  14 He said, "No; rather I indeed come now ascaptain of the host of the LORD." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, "What has my lord to say to his servant?15 Thecaptain of the LORD'S host said to Joshua, "Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy." And Joshua did so.
