Day 32 - Religious spirit of Spirit of Power

Dear Seeking Friends,

Luke 21:22For those are days of vengeance [of rendering full justice or satisfaction], that all things that are written may be fulfilled.

Joshua 10:3-4Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,  "Come up to me and help me, that we may attack Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel."

  • Hoham, king of Hebron – his name means “whom Jehovah impels.”  As a god over his people Hoham impels (drives by exertion of strong moral pressure).  In other words, he will drive people into religious performance to perfect themselves.  The result will be legalism.  This driving force will pressure people to try to make themselves better by behavior modification – it’s by the Holy Spirit we can overcome the works of the flesh not by works. We are meant to walk in the Spirit not by a driving force of religious ‘do’s and don’ts’.  This can lead to passivity, retreat, moral corruption, exhaustion, weariness and broken relationships.  It causes an inability to move forward in the things of God and will always resist spiritual warfare.

Religious spirit or Spirit of Power

2Timothy 3:1-5 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, {false...: or, one who foments strife} Traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Scripture References: Read Roman 12: 1-3. Matthew 23 (Jesus’ treatise on the Pharisaic Religious Spirit)

One Definition: A religious spirit (mindset) seeks to substitute religious activity for the power of the Holy Spirit and the grace of God in the believer’s life. The primary objective of a Religious Spirit (mindset) is to have the church “maintain an outward form of Godliness, while denying the power of the Holy Spirit. (2 Tim 3:5)

Right Alignment Is Key

The five kings formed an alliance [agreeing / working together to achieve a common goal].

  • Hebron means “association.”  This spirit will try to bring you into relationships with religious people who are legalistic but also with people who are not in sync with God’s timing or the present truth He is revealing.
  • Being properly aligned is so key today: one sign of a religious groupor people is ‘doing the same thing we have always done’. God has been realigning His Church in four distinct ways:

-        Practicing Traditions: a long established custom that has the effect of an unwritten law, doing things the same way over and over again just because that is the way we have always done it. [services are predictable, yearly sermons, yearly schedule of events – things stay the same].

-        Government: the exercise of authority, function or power to govern. [pastoral model to apostolic model]

-        Influences: the power of persons or things to affect others [Kingdom minded vs. church minded]

-        Methods: a way of doing anything, mode, process; especially an orderly procedure or way of teaching, system or doing things. [outward focused not just inward focused – breaking out of the traditional way of doing church].

What men see as ‘church’ isn’t necessarily what God sees as Church! Whose church are you attending?

Take Action

1. Read Galatians 6:4-10 Let us examine ourselves to see where we stand in religious activity. As Holy Spirit reveals things, write them down, repent, and decide to do things differently.

James said: Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. James 1:27

2. Examine Your Alignment: Who are you aligned with? Why? Is for convenience sake? Are you draw there because the leader is charismatic, has good worship, preaches a good message, you can climb the ladder of ministry? Is it because the ministry is large, has a good reputation, doesn’t make spiritual waves?

3. Look closely at the four ways God is reforming His Church in this hour. How does the ministry or church you attend align with the reformations that are transpiring?

4. Ask the Holy Spirit if you are rightly aligned, if not, ask the Father where you are to align in this hour. Be willing to make the change.

Jesus, Didn’t Judge Things By The Sight Of His Eyes Or By The Hearing Of His Ears…tell the spirit of religion you don’t want any part of him – command the spirit to leave you. Ask Holy Spirit to fill you with fresh revelation of His plans for your life.

Declare This Passage Over Yourself

Isaiah 11:2-3The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. His delight is in the fear of the LORD, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;
